Internationally acclaimed jockey Chantal Sutherland, now based in California, still has her heart in Ontario and at Woodbine Racetrack. She appeals, on behalf of her friends in the Ontario racing industry, for Ontarians to step up and take action against the OLG and the provincial government for their decision to cancel the slots-at-racetracks partnership.
Sutherland, whose father Hugh is a standardbred owner and formerly trained standardbreds and raced at the old Orangeville Raceway, calls the decision "drastic" and states that the lives of her friends and family in Ontario would be ruined.
"The history of Ontario horse racing would be dealt a devastating blow," notes Sutherland in a video produced for racingfuture.com. "This sport is a wonderful mix of rural and urban people and, once again, it's the country folk who are going to take the hit. These farmers who grow hay, feed, raise these beautiful animals...it's a three to four-year process and the provincial government wants to completely destroy the entire infrastructure."
Sutherland urges Ontarians to contact their local MPP and make sure people are aware of this decision.
