The Manitoba Great Western Harness Racing Circuit hosted it first stakes events of the 2014 harness racing season on Saturday afternoon with Manitoba-sired three-year-old pacers starring in four Golden Boy and Silk Lace divisions at Glenboro Fair.
Making just his second career start, Elska Min won the first $4,066 Golden Boy Stake division for colts and geldings, looping the leader past the half and drawing off by seven lengths before hitting the wire in 2:05.3. Only Hope finished second and early leader Home Matters was third. The maiden-breaking Armbro Baylor-Workin Lady gelding is owned by trainer/driver Richard Remillard and Valerie Emerson, both of Gladstone, MB.
Uncle Bob was a gate-to-wire winner in 2:07.1 in the second Golden Boy division with Sayitlikeyoumeanit following three lengths behind. Chill Fighter was a distant third. Driver Ron Cullen and trainer Jodie Cullen share ownership of the Ci Ci Bob-Treasure Kash gelding with Annabelle Pirie and Ken Hanson of Strathclair, MB. The win was his first in eight career starts.
Undefeated filly Dirt Road Anthem romped to a 12 length victory in the first $3,553 Silk Lace division in 2:05 for horseman Don Howlett and Winnipeg owners Trevor and Michael Williams. The Armbro Baylor-Pontchatula filly is now two-for-two in her career after a maiden-breaking score last weekend at Miami Fair. Kwikkwik Lika Shaw and Heartland Chai in the four-horse field.
In the other Silk Lace division, multiple stakes winner Mexican Maid recovered from an early break and held off Jeannes Faith by a nose in 2:06.3. Alcars Blue Bird finished over a length behind in third. Darryl Mason trains and drives the Armbro Baylor-Tequila Lullaby filly for Don Anness of Emo, Ont. She is also two-for-two this year after winning four of her seven freshman starts, including the Kindergarten and Juvenile stakes.
