Trotters Battle At Summerside In ATSS

Square-gaited stars of the Atlantic Sires Stakes program were in action at Summerside Raceway on Monday evening, as the half mile oval hosted a pair of $7,440 tilts for two-year-olds and a quartet of $4,400 divisions for sophomores

.

Here’s a complete recap of what took place in those divisions:

Atlantic Sires Stakes (Two-Year-Old Trotters)

Howmacswickedflame took home the lion’s share of $7,440 purse in the opening division for driver Mike Stevenson and trainer Blayne White. Making just her second lifetime start, the daughter of Red Flamethrower-Wicked Whisper was a winner by more than six lengths in 2:13.3. Crystal Bailey was second and West River Victory finished third.

Sandra and Blayne White of Belle River, PEI share ownership on the youngster, who was a $1,000 purchase from last year’s Atlantic Classic Yearling Sale.

Maple Leaf Spirit, who won at first asking in last week’s pari-mutuel debut, came back for a second helping of the winner’s circle in the second division. Trainer/driver Ralph Annear had her on the lead through panels of :32.1, 1:05.2 and 1:36.1 before kicking home to win by a length in 2:06. B J High Meadow was second and Waiting On A Woman was third.

Annear, who also bred the daughter of Meadowagogo-Maple Leaf Legacy, shares ownership on the trotter with Steven Sorrie of Sturgeon, PEI.

Atlantic Sires Stakes (Three-Year-Old Trotters)

Scarlet Patti marched to the front and didn’t look back in her $4,400 assignment for trainer/driver Darryl MacLean, and in doing so she pushed her winning streak to 12-in-a-row. She sliced out splits of :30.1, 1:01.1 and 1:32.2 before slipping home in :31.2 en route to a career-best clocking of 2:03.4. Runner-up Rosetown Dove was 3-3/4 lengths in arrears, with Bo Best a distant third.

Gordon MacLean of Winsloe, PEI holds the papers on the homebred, who is 2-for-2 this season after an 11-for-13 rookie campaign. She’s on the verge of surpassing $40,000 in lifetime earnings.

A C Jocker notched the first win of his career when he prevailed by a neck in a time of 2:07.1 in his assignment. Brian MacPhee mapped out the winning trip for the Ambyr MacPhee pupil, who fended off a late charge from runner-up Dusty Lane Ace. A C Gambler was third.

The gelded son of CR High Sierra-Lady Vanessa, who is owned by Albertic Cyr of Havre Aux Maisons, QC, overcame early interference to improve his lifetime record to 1-0-2 in nine tries.

B J Eldorado made a break in his first start of the season, but he was flawless in Monday’s follow-up effort. The son of Meadowagogo-Leap Year Hanover went wire-to-wire to win by a length in a career-best clocking of 2:04.3. Porter was second and Bayous Jewel finished third.

Bred and owned by Bert Honkoop of Montague, PEI, the gelding is now a 4-time winner in his career.

Southfield Sam made it back-to-back wins thanks to a 2:03.2 triumph in the final division. The son of PJs Nabby-Gold Pendant, who was handled by Terry Gallant for trainer Thane Mann, drew clear to win by 3-3/4 lengths over Rustico Nicky. West River Unique grabbed the show dough.

Southfield Farms Inc of Summerside, PEI owns the gelding, who is now a two-time winner in eight career assignments.
