Kawartha Downs participated in a nationwide initiative called the Bring A Friend National Challenge on Saturday night, which encouraged regular race goers to bring a friend to the track who had never attended harness racing.

Each newcomer and the friend who accompanied them were given a free program and Doug McPherson’s tip sheet along with a $2 betting voucher and well over 100 of each were distributed. They were also eligible for a myriad of other prizes distributed including rides in the starting car, paddock tours, dinner for two in the Kawartha Downs’ dining room and more than $100 in betting vouchers.

Nick Boyd had a driving triple while Gord Brown and Rick Webb each scored a double on Kawartha Downs’ 10-race card this evening, which saw the best crowd to date of the young 2015 season.

In the second race, Brown guided the three-year-old trotting filly Yawkey Way to her second straight win and new lifetime mark with an easy two length win in 1:59.2. Trainer Per Henriksen co-owns the filly with Gary Smith. “She’s a sweetheart to drive, very good gaited,” complimented Brown following the win.

Kawartha Downs’ next card will be Saturday, July 18, which will be the track’s richest night of the season as it hosts the Ontario Sires Stakes three-year-old trotting colts. The track will also be celebrating its 43rd anniversary and fans will receive free t-shirts, ball caps and cupcakes while supplies last. Post time is 7 p.m.
