"I really think that he can go a little bit faster if everything's right...maybe it will happen this weekend, who knows? He wasn't done at the wire, he was still going on."
When Carl Jamieson is inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall Of Fame as part of its Class of 2013, his biography will definitely need an update from when it was penned a few months back. Jamieson now boasts a pacer that co-holds the world record for the fastest mile ever in a race, and Warrawee Needy also holds the distinction of being the first horse ever to achieve that time at night.
"He might have went in :46," said Jamieson when asked if that race was held during the day like the miles of Holborn Hanover and Somebeachsomewhere.
On Saturday night at The Meadowlands, Jamieson sends out Warrawee Needy and stablemate Up The Credit in the 2013 William R. Haughton Memorial. That race boasts another top-notch field of older pacers, including Golden Receiver (who finished second to 'Needy'), the richest pacer in the history of harness racing Foiled Again, and fellow elim winner Sweet Lou. Despite these elims both being won by four-year-olds, Jamieson feels that it's still difficult for the four-year-olds to jump up and compete with the older pacing division.
"These four-year-olds were top, top three-year-olds -- exceptional three-year-olds. To race against the aged horses, it's that much tougher."
In light of what's sure to be another lightning fast mile on Saturday night, Jamieson gave his pupils a break this week while stabled in New Jersey with the Tony O'Sullivan barn.
"It's very hot and humid down there. I gave them a couple of days off. I told them [Thursday] to just blow them out a trip in 2:20 or :25. Nothing drastic at all."
