Going in behind the starting gate for Monday evening’s $130,000 OSS Gold Series final for two-year-old trotting fillies at Grand River Raceway, Witch Way must have felt a bit like Rodney Dangerfield because she was getting no respect
.
Despite winning her OSS Gold Series elimination one week earlier over the Elora half-miler, the daughter of Ken Warkentin-Chelemark Gizmo was let go at odds of 6-1 in Monday’s final. She used the pari-mutuel snub as a motivator with the big money on the line.
Randy Waples tucked into the three-hole with the Joe MacIsaac trainee while Wark Woman rolled to the top and sliced out an opening quarter in :30.2. Waples was on the move shortly past that juncture with Witch Way, and she cleared to the top without much of a tussle. Witch Way sped past the half in 1:00.4 before being collared by the first-over Destinys Magic at the three-quarter pole in 1:31.2. That filly maintained a short lead for a piece of the final turn, but Witch Way battled back and used a :29.3 closing panel to post the win by half a length over a hard-closing Circles. Destinys Magic was a bang up third in the rich tilt. Race favourite Counter Pointe, who matched the track record in last week’s elimination round, made an early break before recovering to salvage a fourth-place cheque.
Doug Millard of Woodstock shares ownership on the talented trotter with the colt’s breeder, Carolyn Williston of Moffat, ON. He’s 2-for-2 with earnings of $85,000 to date.
