Roadside Delight, a two-year-old Bettors Delight colt, out of the Life Sign mare Road Sign won in 1:56.3, for owner David McDuffee of Delray Beach, Florida, in the $19,980 division of the New York Sire Stakes at Buffalo Raceway
Saturday night.
The winning time eclipses by one-fifth of a second, the old record held by Dee Magic Man, who went 1:56.4 in 2001.
It wasn’t a sure thing as Roadside Delight ($8.20) had to sweat out a judge’s inquiry for veering out around the final turn for home.
“He just came out a little,” said winning driver Jack Flanigen. “He’s a super horse that can really fly.”
It was the first lifetime win for the $70,000 Lexington purchase that is trained by Richard Norman. Bettors Glass (Jason Bartlett) came in second, while Townslight Hanover (Aaron Lambert) finished third.
Another high priced Lexington yearling ($72,000) to win was Up The Credit ($3.20), who stopped the clock in 1:57, for trainer-driver Carl Jamieson. Jamieson also owns a piece of this Western Terror offspring with fellow owners Thomas Kyron, and Brian Paquet.
“I could have gone faster, but he was hitting himself in the turns,” said Jamieson. “When we bought him, we instantly had high hopes for him.”
Alex Bullville (Jason Bartlett) was two-lengths back in second, while Bettors Green (Jim McNeight) came in third.
Owner Ken Jacobs made two trips to the Buffalo Raceway’s winner’s circle. First with $44,000 Morrisville purchase Thomas J ($3.60), an Artiscape colt who won in 1:57.3, with reinsman Jim Morrill, Jr. in the bike.
In the very next race worth $20,380, Major Way, (Art Major-Feminine Ways) with driver Jason Bartlett in the sulky, scored in 1:58.4. Five lengths back in second were South Coast and driver Brian Cross.
Trained by Linda Toscano, Major Way ($2.50) the prohibitive favorite in the race, quickly took command of the race, just past the quarter-pole. A :27.3 last quarter-mile was to much for the competition.
The other Sire Stakes winners on the night were all driven by Jim Morrill, Jr.
A And Gs Major ($12.20) won a division in 2:00.1, Remus Blue Chip ($2.20) in 1:58.2., and Samandar ($5.40) in 1:57.3.
