The majority of the money was directed in the direction of the nose of Blue Star Jet in Sunday afternoon’s $56,300 Alberta Plainsman Final at Century Downs, but Wrangler Cash rallied for a 5-1 upset in the rich event for three-year-old colt and gelding pacers.
The win was part of a big afternoon for trainer/driver Kelly Hoerdt, who finished the afternoon with a training and driving triple.
Wrangler Cash was parked and pressing Blue Star Jet at the quarter pole in :27, but it was Blue Star Jet who took the field to the half in :55.4. Prairie Mystic blasted up quickly to go after Blue Star Jet, and that longshot showed a short lead while parked at the three-quarter pole in 1:27.
Wrangler Cash angled to the outside and tracked cover in the backstretch, and when Hoerdt called on him in the lane the colt responded with a :29.4 closing panel. That was good enough to earn him the one-length triumph over Blue Star Maverick in 1:57.1. Outlaw Turn N Burn came on late to grab the show dough.
Sent off at odds of 5-1, the son of As Promised-W Jean posted the victory for Hoerdt and partners Blair Corbeil and Dr. Maurice Stewart. It was the first win of the season in 10 tries for the four-time winner who lifted his lifetime earnings to $116,999 with the triumph.
