At the mid-point of the 2017 harness season, Trot Insider has shared an update on the drivers and trainers leading the national standings heading into the Canada Day racing action.
Canada's 2016 Future Star Award winner Louis-Philippe Roy has emerged as the top money-earning driver following his move to the WEG Circuit. The Mont-Joli, Quebec native has driven horses to purse earnings of nearly $2.75 million so far this year on Canadian soil and is currently the leading driver at the Mohawk meet. Doug McNair sits second in the national standings with $2.55 million in earnings.
Bob McClure has held his ground as the win leader, topping the charts with 256 victories. The Elora, Ontario reinsman ranks number one in the standings at multiple tracks including Georgian Downs, Grand River Raceway, Flamboro Downs and The Raceway at the Western Fair District. He boasts 49 more wins than runner-up Roy (207).
Four-time defending Trainer of the Year Richard Moreau's reign atop the standings continues with his Puslinch, Ontario based stable posting 122 wins and earning $1.82 million in purses thus far in 2017. He tops the leaderboards at both Mohawk Racetrack and Grand River Raceway. Cullen holds the second-place position in the national standings in both categories with 75 wins while approaching the million-dollar earnings mark.
Red Shores' leading reinsman Marc Campbell of Winsloe, P.E.I. is the top percentage driver (for a minimum of 130 starts) with a 0.509 URS while Yves Tessier of Laval, Quebec leads on the training side with a URS of 0.460.
