Monday's Bet Canadian Picks

Published: July 1, 2012 11:49 pm EDT

Standardbred Canada's Bet Canadian best bet and value play selections for Monday, July 2 are now available.

On the anniversary of our country's first horse racing event, Standardbred Canada is bringing back its popular Bet Canadian campaign and selections for harness racing tracks on Canada Day weekend.

Exactly 100 years to the day before Canadian Confederation, the first horse racing meet was held in this country on July 1, 1767. The event was for a purse of $40 and won by a mare named Modesty. The race, which took place on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City, ushered in a rich tradition of horse racing in the province and across Canada. Our sport grew and prospered long before concepts like ice hockey or American football had even been conceived.

SC helped close out the 2011 racing season with its much heralded Bet Canadian campaign, offering free program pages and selections. These popular selections will be featured on the SC website for Saturday, June 30, Sunday July 1 and Monday, July 2, and will include each standardbred track racing in Canada that day.

Alberta Downs - Program Pages

Best Bet - Race 2
#1 Hollywood Breeze (5-2)

Picked off late in her last by a filly who went out and won again in 1:57 and change on Saturday. The favourite draws far to the outside and that will be the deciding factor here.
Hollywood Breeze (at odds of 0.95 to 1) made a break and finished eighth.

Value Pick: Race 9
#3 Dewinton Destroyer (7-2)

One of last year's top horses in the province has been snakebitten thus far in 2012. A better post in this class should help her get off the schneid.
Dewinton Destroyer (at odds of 5.35 to 1) finished ninth.

Fredericton Raceway - Program Pages

Best Bet Race 2
#6 P H Flash (5/2)

High percentage trainer sends out a talented two-year-old on his way up the ranks. Despite the tough post this youngster should be the best of this group.
P H Flash (at odds of 0.25 to 1) finished first, paying $2.50, $2.10, $2.10.

Value Play Race 8
#5 One Wild Nite (8/1)

He is a talented horse who could defeat this group. With all the speed inside of him, look for One Wild Nite to come from off the pace and catch them in the final quarter.
One Wild Nite (at odds of 2.95 to 1) finished sixth with broken equipment.

Grand River Raceway - Program Pages

Best Bet Race 11
#3 The Bronx Bumper (3/1)

Unusual to recommend a horse with two breaks in his last three starts, but this horse deserves the billion. He has won three of seven and finished second to highly regarded Circles in his qualifier. Won his only Grand River start with a first over effort.
The Bronx Bumper (at odds of 3.00 to 1) finished first, paying $8.00, $4.40, $2.80.

Value Bet Race 6
#5 Mutinyonthebounty (4/1)

Has been in really tough in his last few at Mohawk. Against much easier with Trevor Ritchie in the bike, expect this to be his break out race.
Mutinyonthebounty (at odds of 9.10 to 1) finished second, paying $5.80, $3.50.

Mohawk Racetrack - Program Pages

Best Bet: Race #7
#3 Long Live Rock (9/2)

I don't always like to play horses coming in from other tracks but this guy picks up Gillis/Jamieson and lands in a pretty soft spot. In mid-May he was competitive with (and favoured against) two NA Cup finalists. The only question here is...why is he 9/2 in the morning line?
Long Live Rock (at odds of 0.80 to 1) finished second, paying $2.50. $2.20.

Value Play: Race #4
#8 Ontheclock Hanover (9/2)

Here's one that looks like he might bring a decent price (we hope). He missed over 3 weeks after his SBSW division but was an impressive 2nd to a monster last week. Should be a little tighter this week and doesn't face the toughest bunch in the world here.
Ontheclock Hanover (at odds of 1.35 to 1) finished first, paying $4.70, $2.90, $2.50.

Northside Downs - Program Pages

Best Bet: Race 8
#3 Woodmere Westerner (5-2)

When this one raced against Chapter in the Winners Over, he finished far ahead. In this short field, expect a similar result.
Woodmere Westerner (at odds of 1.10 to 1) finished first, paying $4.20, $2.10, $2.10.

Value Play: Race 3
#3 I Am Mint (5-1)

Going with the freshness angle here as he has the speed to go with these plus is the only one that didn't just race on Saturday. Dave Kelly will put him into play and he should factor.
I Am Mint finished fifth.

Rideau Carleton Raceway - Program Pages

Best Bet: Race #2
#8 Oaklea Triton (5/1)

After making breaks at Mohawk and back at Rideau he qualified well and returns to the same spot where he was an open length winner in back-to-back starts here in May. The recent breaks and the PP will help you get a price on this guy who lays over the field if right.
Oaklea Triton (at odds of 0.70 to 1) finished first, paying $3.40, $2.60, $2.30

Value Play: Race # 7
#8 Talk Back (5/1)

After winning 2 of his last 3 in this class he's only 4th choice here in the morning line...probably due to the PP. With his gate speed post won't matter. Watch for him to go right down the road in here and win again.
Talk Back (at odds of 6.30 to 1) finished second by a head, paying $5.90, $3.80

Truro Raceway - Program Pages

Best Bet Race 4
#1 Godesss Rosa (5/2)

This may be a maiden event at Truro but this first time starter should have a very bright future. She is heavily staked, qualified very well and has the pedigree to be very good. Her mother Yankee Goddess earned more than $200,000 as a racehorse. More importantly Goddesss Rosa has seven siblings with career marks of 1:53 or better. Five of them have already earned more than $275,000. Shouldn't have any trouble with this group.
Goddess Rosa (at odds of 2.00 to 1) finished seventh after making a break

Value Play Race 2
#8 Beer Drinkin Blue (4/1)

Competitive in his last two, this five year old should be competitive against this low level group. At a fair price.
Beer Drinkin Blue (at odds of 11.30 to 1) finished sixth.
