Shipping in from Pennsylvania, Sevruga tackled a field of top trotters on Friday night in the Meadowlands Racetrack's $40,000 Invitational.
With Andy Miller in the sulky, Julie Miller trainee Sevruga was part of a six-horse cavalry charge for the lead into the first turn. Left parked out through a :27.2 first quarter, he took over command in the backstretch, but had Hot Shot Blue Chip (Corey Callahan) hot on his heels.
Hot Shot Blue Chip cleared at the :54.4 half and led the way past three-quarters in 1:23.3. However, Miller pulled the pocket in the stretch and Sevruga wore down the favourite to win by a length and a half in a career-best 1:52 flat.
The Jimmy Takter-trained In Focus (Pat Berry) rallied home for third to earn millionaire status for Toronto owners John and Jim Fielding, and New Jersey's Christina Takter.
Sevruga paid $9.20 to win 7-2 third choice. The four-year-old Sjs Caviar gelding is now four-for-six on the year with $57,000. His 11th career win pushed his bankroll over the $200,000 mark for KDM Stables Corp.
