It didn’t take veteran pacer Eagle Luck very long to get acclimated to his new surroundings. The winner in excess of $1.2 million survived a first-over journey en route to winning in his debut at Red Shores Charlottetown for new trainer/driver Jason Hughes.

Sent off as the 1-2 favourite in Thursday’s $1,700 feature race, Eagle Luck got away third from his Post 5 starting spot while Keystone Dimitri shot to the position of command and threw down early fractions of :29 and 1:00.1. Eagle Luck marched first-over in the backstretch to come after Keystone Dimitri, who was still in command at the three-quarter pole in 1:31.2. Eagle Luck dug in and used a :28.2 closing quarter to secure the win by three-quarters of length over Keystone Dimitri in 2:00.1. Third prize went to longshot Cabo Pan Lucas.

The nine-year-old son of Camluck-Duncans Artsplace, who is owned by Frank Dettore Horse Racin of North Ridgeville, OH, is now a 25-time winner in his career.

LOTTO 649 Red Cup Classic, a brand new event featuring racing, dining & gaming, will official launch Saturday in Charlottetown with a 6pm post time while the inaugural event moves to Red Shores Summerside on Sunday at 1pm. The occasion marks the 30th anniversary of LOTTO 649 with fan giveaways, promotions, 24 trackside presentations and the Atlantic Aged Pacing Mares Series.
