Somwherovrarainbow, the 2012 Dan Patch Award winner, showed she’s ready to defend her title when she captured the fastest division of Tuesday’s $235,072 at The Meadows. The event for three-year-old fillies, known as the Adios Betty, was contested over three divisions, with Novascotia Hanover and Charisma Hanover taking the other splits.
A winner of $562,699 at two, Somwherovrarainbow captured a PASS division at Harrah’s Philadelphia on May 16 and had little trouble making it two straight. She quarter-poled to the lead and shrugged off a first-over challenge from Mistresstothestars to score in 1:51.4, a tick off the stake record. R Marie Hanover was second, four lengths back, with Rescue Team third.
“She was comfortable and in the bit the whole time,” said winning driver Montrell Teague. “When that horse came alongside her, I wasn’t too worried because she usually won’t let anyone by. I’ve seen other horses go in 1:49, but I think she can do that right there with them. I think she’s ready for them.”
George Teague, Jr. trains the daughter of Somebeachsomewhere-Rainbow Blue for George Teague Jr Inc, K&R Racing and Ted Gewertz.
The first-over Novascotia Hanover dueled with the leader, UF Dragons Queen, before inching away in deep stretch and defeating her by a head in 1:53 for Brett Miller. Carols Desire earned show.
“We raced her six days ago, and that mile may have had her a little tired,” Miller said. “I didn’t want to come first over, but she held in there game and showed a lot of guts.”
It was one of three wins on the 15-race card for Miller. Virgil Morgan, Jr. trains the daughter of Somebeachsomewhere-Northern Sky, who soared over $200,000 in lifetime earnings, for Frank Bellino.
Dave Palone gave Charisma Hanover a :29.3 second-quarter breather, enabling the daughter of Dragon Again-Caught The Bouquet to waltz home in 1:53.1, 1-1/2 lengths better than Native Dream. The pocket-sitting Champagne Tonight was third.
“I was happy when I got things lined up and they were content to follow,” Palone said. “I never took her plugs out. She just walked around the track and sprinted the last eighth, well within herself. I think she’s one of the top fillies in the country. She’s yet to be asked.”
Ron Burke trains Charisma Hanover, who has won all five of her 2013 starts, for Burke Racing Stable and Weaver Bruscemi LLC.
