The rail opened up in deep stretch and that allowed Imperial Count to shoot through and post a 5-1 upset in the $38,000 Preferred Trot at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday evening.
With Scott Zeron at the lines, Imperial Count shot to immediate command from Post 5 and had the field chasing him to the quarter pole in :27.3. Race favourite Tall Cotton brushed to the top in the backstretch and proceeded to lead the field to the mid-way point in :57.2 before being pressed to the three-quarter pole in 1:27 by the first-over Andover America. Tall Cotton drifted off the rail in the lane and that allowed Zeron to shoot through and grab the narrow score with Imperial Count, who nosed out Andover America. Lexis Noah came on strong to finish third.
Richard ‘Nifty’ Norman trains the four-year-old son of Angus Hall-Miss Imperial for Neven Botica of Perth, AUL. The victory improved the trotter’s 2012 record to 4-3-2 from nine trips to the track. The eight-time winner pushed his lifetime earnings to $486,902.
