Boomboom Tonight continued his comeback campaign with another victory in the $6,000 prelims of the Series Quebecoises for older pacers on Sunday afternoon, June 28 at Hippodrome 3R.
The two-time Quebec-Bred Stakes champion, who was a winner in his first start in 21 months during last week's second leg of the series, was the best he's been yet while lowering his lifetime mark a tick to 1:54.3 for trainer/owner Elisabeth Pothier of St-Christophe-D'Arthabask, Que.
Driven by Francis Picard, 4-5 second choice Boomboom Tonight led the five-horse male division through fractions of :27.4, :57.2 and 1:26.1 before a rematch with Bets Beach (Pascal Berube) ensued. Boomboom Tonight again defeated the favoured opening-leg winner by half a length after a stretch showdown. Kingston Panic (Simon Delisle) rallied for third.
After starting his five-year-old campaign with a pair of victories, the homebred Sportswriter-Rapid Tonight gelding is now 12-for-20 lifetime with earnings of $93,924.
Godiva Shadow Girl also picked up her second win in the series as she fought back in a stretch battle to take a mares division by a nose in 1:56.4 for driver William Roy, trainer Lyne Asselin and owner Raymond Larose of St-Henry-De-Levis, Que.
An opening-leg winner the first Sunday in June, the homebred six-year-old daughter of Shadow Play-Godiva Beachgirl was back on top with a loose lead through fractions of :28, :56.4 and 1:26.2 before Islamabad (Francis Picard) closed from behind traffic and made it a close call. Kiss Me Bad (Steven Gagnon) rounded out the top three, finishing 2-3/4 lengths behind the 4-5 popular winner.
Godiva Shadow Girl now boasts a dozen career wins and $73,535 in purse earnings from 31 starts.
The other mares division was won by Shanghaibluebeach with Jocelyn Gendron directing a successful front-end mission for trainer/owner/co-breeder Pierre Leclerc of Louiseville, Que.
Sent off as the 7-5 second favourite, the eight-year-old Shanghai Phil-Blue Beach Girl mare cruised through splits of :29, :59.4 and 1:28.4 en route to the 1-1/2-length victory in 1:58.3 over even-money Whitemountaincammy (Marie-Claude Auger), a winner last week, and Godiva Lady Morgan (William Roy).
Shanghaibluebeach, who was a runner-up to Kiss Me Bad in round two, has earned 14 career wins with 22 other top three finishes in 78 races while banking $57,854.
