The first leg of the Atlantic Aged Mares Pacing series will highlight the Saturday evening card at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at The Charlottetown Driving Park.
The 12-dash card will get underway at 6:00 pm, with the top mares racing off in races 9 and 11. Race 9 has Doober Hoozzitz the early favourite from the trailing post 9 for driver Terry Gallant, trainer Thane Mann and owner Fred Lamont of Calgary. The mare took a new lifetime mark of 1:56 her last time out. Other top entries in the nine horse field include Dirt Track Momma (Marc Campbell) and General Luckypercy (Gilles Barrieau).
Race 11 has another nine horse field going for $3,340, with the favourite yet again trailing as JK Special has drawn post 9. Walter Cheverie will drive the mare for owner-trainer Joe Smallwood. Other likely favorites are Bunny Mach (Jason Hughes) and Putnams Glory (Kenny Arsenault).
Co-sponsored by Standardbred Canada and Red Shores Racetrack & Casino, the series is for for aged pacing mares that are Canadian sired and/or 100% Canadian owned.
The $1,800 Open trot lines up in race 4 and newly minted Summerside track record holder Abundaspin will look to keep with his winning ways. The 13-year-old trotter has drawn post 4 for trainer-driver Harold Shepherd and owner Mikaela Lustic of Warren Grove. His main competition will come from posts 6 and 7 with the Ron Gass trained duo of Caliban Hanover (Gass) and Buckling Banbury (Corey MacPherson), respectively.
It’s a busy weekend of racing on Prince Edward Island. Red Shores officials would like to remind racing participants who are shipping in for the race program on Saturday to use the Department of Transportation parking lot on Park street. This is due to the Big Red Concert series on Canada Day weekend.
Gold Cup & Saucer grand-stand seats will go on sale at 9am (AST) on Tuesday July 2, 2013 from the Red Shores race office in Charlottetown. The price $50 per seat. Fans can also purchase tickets over the phone at 902.629.6636.
