Twenty-nine young hopefuls will take their first strides toward Ontario Sires Stakes stardom this Saturday, June 29 at Kawartha Downs.
The two-year-old trotting colts will compete for a total of $90,000 in four Grassroots divisions, and a trio of young trotters head into the contest with a decided advantage.
John Bax trainees Parkhillkryptonite and Kiwi Pres, and Dagfin Henriksen trainee Lucky Mass have all qualified at least once over the Fraserville oval. All three colts qualified on June 15, with Parkhillkryptonite touring Kawartha in 2:04.3 and Kiwi Pres going round in 2:04. Unfortunately, Lucky Mass made an error in the June 15 outing and had to return for a second qualifier on June 22, trotting to a 2:06.3 clocking over a surface rated one second slower than normal.
Peterborough, Ont. resident Bax will hand the lines over to his son, Matthew, for Saturday’s Grassroots test, and the young Bax will steer Parkhillkryptonite from Post 4 in the second race and Kiwi Pres from Post 8 in the eighth race. Henriksen, who calls Hastings home, will steer Lucky Mass from Post 3 in the sixth race.
The two-year-old trotting colts will also compete for Grassroots glory in Race 4.
Saturday evening’s excitement will get underway at 7:00 p.m. when the Kawartha Downs starter calls the first race in behind the gate.
