Windemere Best Man dominated the top pacing class at Inverness Raceway with a career-best performance on Sunday afternoon.
Sent postward as the 8-5 second choice following a close runner-up finish to favourite Euchred after their front-end duel in the $1,800 Winners Over Pace last week, Windemere Best Man took a commanding lead into the first turn of their rematch. He led a gapped out field of five, with Euchred keeping close tabs in the pocket, through fractions of :28.4 and :58.1. The rest of the field began to tighten up down the backstretch the second time with JJ Scarlett looping into second-place but Windemere Best Man gave them all the slip to three-quarter in 1:27.4 and held nearly four lengths clear through the lane while lowering his mark to 1:56.4 with Zach Mullins in the bike. Euchred faded in third.
Windemere Best Man also won his season's debut on May 28 and is now two-for-five competing in the top class at Inverness this year for trainer Lanny Hanscombe and local owners Simon Poirier and Chad MacDonnell. The five-year-old Malicious gelding boasts top three finishes in half of his 60 career starts, including a dozen victories.
Windemere Best Man paid $5.40 to win and completed a sweep of the late Daily Double for Mullins, who also drove his own pacing mare Watt Machs Me Win ($10.10) on a successful front-end mission the race prior.
