Nutmegs Yankee, a two-year-old daughter of Real Desire, scorched the Scioto Downs oval in 1:56.3 in a Wednesday qualifier
. Chris Page drove the filly to victory by a length over Cruise On Ashley.
Cruise On Ashley set the fractions while Page and Nutmegs Yankee got the pocket trip. The opening half was in :57.4 seconds, but Page waited until they led the field into the stretch to make his move. Nutmegs Yankee covered her final quarter in :28.4 seconds.
The winner is out of Salty Yankee p, 4, 1:54.1 ($275,946) and is a sister to Yankee Stardom, a winner in 1:50 this year as a five-year-old. Nutmegs Yankee is trained by Brian Brown for owner Irving Bork of Connecticut.
The fastest trotting two-year-old among the qualifiers was My Minnie Chip (Chip Chip Hooray), a winner for trainer Mike Medors in 2:02. She defeated Finaltab Hanover (Cantab Hall).
Another fast two-year-old winner was the pacing gelding Dr Dew, who covered a mile in 1:57 while racing on top for trainer-driver Billy Walters. He’s a son of Royal Mattjesty and finished two lengths ahead of Something For Doc (Western Hanover).
