Lyons Geoff Ties Hanover Track Record

A beautiful warm night brought out a season best crowd for Molson Men's night at Hanover Raceway. Those who attended enjoyed close to $2,000 in prizes courtesy of Molson, and witnessed a record tieing night

.

Five-year-old Lyons Geoff went off as the heavy favourite in the $9,000 Preferred 3 Pace and jumped out to the early lead pacing through the quarter in :27.3. The rest of the field gave Anthony Haughan’s steer respect allowing him a breather in the second quarter hitting the half in :57.2.

Cams Best Bet and Dave Boughton got the pocket trip, and did all he could to keep that spot through the three-quarter time of 1:26, and then when Cams Best Bet pulled out after the final turn, Haughan asked Lyons Geoff to turn on the jets. The son of Astreos did just that hitting the mile in a Hanover record tieing 1:54.1. Lyons Geoff now shares the fastest mile at Hanover Raceway with Magical GG, who set the same time in 2007.

Afterwards, Haughan said trainer Bruce Goit told him to go after the record tonight, but Haughan said he told Bruce that he would first look after the win, and let the records worry about themselves. Haughan said he never was aware or concerned about the track record but was more concerned about Cams Best Bet, who he knew was right on his helmet. Back To Back Jack, owned, trained and driven by Dale Fritz of Walkerton, was third.

Hanover features another great card of racing next Saturday at 7:15 p.m and will show Canada’s richest harness race, the $1.5 million Pepsi North America Cup, live from Woodbine on its Jumbotron.
