Dewey Arnold sprung from the pocket in the stretch for driver Ridge Warren to take the featured $21,918 Open Trot at Tioga Downs on Saturday, June 14.
Duly Resolved (Tyler Miller) went to the front and led to the quarter in :26.4 and had things his way to the half in :55.4. Purple Lord (Jim Pantaleano) was first to make a move, going first-up heading down the backstretch, but he failed to threaten the leader. Duly Resolved was first to three-quarters in 1:24, but as they reached the head of the stretch, Dewey Arnold ($13) popped out of the pocket and blew right on by him to win in 1:53.3 by 1-1/4 lengths. Duly Resolved had to settle for second. Yucatan Party Man (Dan Rawlings) finished third.
Dewey Arnold is a seven-year-old gelding by Deweycheatumnhowe, out of Livn On A Prayer. The win was his fifth this season and 40th of his career for trainer David Dewhurst and owner Phillip Hale.
In finishing second, former O'Brien Award winner Duly Resolved reached $1 million in lifetime earnings. The son of Resolve-Motown Muscle has won 18 times in his 76-race career and has earned $1,005,086 following Saturday's place effort. He finished second in both the 2021 Mohawk Million and that year's William Wellwood Memorial and was named Two-year-old Trotting Colt of the Year. Jeff Cullipher now trains the six-year-old gelding for Pollack Racing LLC.
Tioga Downs returns to live racing on Sunday, June 15 with a post time of 1 p.m.
