Horseman Daryl Bier broke his pelvis in a four-horse accident during Thursday morning qualifiers at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. The spill also killed Bier's horse, the four-year-old trotter Punxsutawney, a winner of more than $300,000.
In a posting on his Facebook page, Bier wrote: "I am doing well. Broke my pelvis in a couple places. Should heal on its own. I am sorry Punxsutawney. Thank you for all the well wishes."
Punxsutawney was a Red Mile Grand Circuit winner at two in 2012, and his multiple stakes starts last year included the Hambletonian eliminations and finals of the Canadian Trotting Classic and Kentucky Futurity.
There was no other word on the other horses and drivers involved in the accident, and Bier did not add anything else to his posting.
Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the connections of Punxsutawney and wishing Bier a fast and complete recovery.
