The quarter-horse industry in the southern United States had a bombshell dropped on it Tuesday, June 12 when multiple arrests were made by Federal Bureau of Investigations agents in New Mexico and Oklahoma.

The action was the culmination of a two-year investigation into allegations of a violent Mexican drug cartel laundering roughly $1-million a year through the industry.

According to a report by The Los Angeles Times, Jose Trevino Morales, his wife, and five associates were apprehended in relation to an alleged scheme which saw drug profits laundered by “purchasing, training, breeding and racing American quarter horses.”

It has been alleged that the Zetas are behind some of the most ruthless mass killings in the ongoing Central American drug wars.
