Two-year-old trotters earned their first charted lines in Friday's (June 11) morning qualifying session at Woodbine Mohawk Park, with seven of the 10 heats dedicated to square-gaited rookies.
Dave Menary trainee World At War Deo set the speed standard among the two-year-olds by way of a 2:00 mile in the fifth race while in line to Jody Jamieson. The son of Chapter Seven and Yalta Hanover drafted comfortably from the pocket behind Bar Brawl (Gino Toscani) before angling out in mid-stretch and vaulting to a three-length win. Steve Heimbecker, Blue Chip Bloodstock, Michael Guerriero and Menary Racing Inc. own the full brother to 1:53.4 trotter Nimbus Deo and the half-brother to New York Sire Stakes preliminary winner Fashion Forever.
One race later, Say Something turned in the morning's fastest mile from a filly, rating a 1:03 middle half before scooting four lengths clear of Opas Faith to win in 2:01. Owner Gino Toscani, who purchased the daughter of Muscle Mass and Check Seven for $37,000 at Lexington last fall, drove for trainer Herbert Holland.
Trade Secret, the full sister of 2019 Hambletonian winner Forbidden Trade, finished third in her first qualifier, beaten seven lengths by Maisys Muscles and timed individually in 2:05.4 with a :29.3 closing sectional. Less than 24 hours after driving Forbidden Trade to victory at Harrah's Philadelphia, Bob McClure was aboard the daughter of Kadabra and Pure Ivory for trainer Luc Blais and owner Determination.
