Union Man Hanover Stays Perfect

A paycheque for the winner's share of the purse doesn't change based on the margin of victory. For Union Man Hanover, his winner's share of the purse was also the same in the case of a two-plus length defeat.

In the Saturday (June 1) Winners Over pacing feature at Exhibition Park, a competitive field of four went postward for a purse of $1,500. John Davidson hustled HP Bushido Dragjet out from post two and cleared around rail-leaving favourite Instant Shadow (Robert Laffin) but not without appearing to clip the inside horse on his way by. HP Bushido Dragjet would then reel off fractions of :30, :59.2 and 1:29.1 while all along on the lead before coasting home more than two lengths to the good ahead of a quick-closing Union Man Hanover (Dr. Mitchell Downey) in a time of 2:00.

Upon investigating that first turn incident, the APHRC judges deemed that HP Bushido Dragjet did in fact impede the progress of Instant Shadow, prompting a disqualification of the winner. HP Bushido Dragjet finished first, but was placed fourth. That placing bumped runner-up Union Man Hanover into the win spot to keep his perfect seasonal record intact. Fall Bliss (Mike Downey) finished third but was placed second, and Instant Shadow was placed third.

A 10-year-old son of Artiscape - Up Front Rose owned by Dr. Downey and trained by Ellen Stevenson, Union Man Hanover now boasts 43 lifetime victories with earnings in excess of $431,800.
