UPDATE: Four-Horse Spill At Alberta Downs

Published: May 8, 2011 09:52 pm EDT

A four-horse accident marred the ninth race at Alberta Downs on Sunday, and Trot Insider has learned driver Rene Goulet suffered the worst injuries

from those involved in the mishap.

Reports indicate Havanna Rules (Keith Clark) took a bad step and fell on the way to the three-quarter pole. That caused a chain reaction to Revoler (Kelly Hoerdt), RS Merlin (Jeff Stone) and Luv You Too Bye (Rene Goulet). All of the horses suffered only minor scrapes and cuts, and three of the four reinsmen walked away relatively unscathed.

Sources told Trot Insider, however, Rene Goulet needed stitches for facial injuries and he'll require surgery on his nose. Fortunately for the reinsman, he didn't suffer any broken bones.

Further details will be posted when they become available. Please join Standardbred Canada in wishing a speedy recovery to Rene Goulet.

Earlier on the card Nakednakednaked wired up a solid group of distaffers in the $8,700 Fillies & Mares Open for the tandem of driver Jeff Stone and trainer Joseph O’Brien. Stone had the four-year-old daughter of Brandons Cowboy-Terrysdirtydeeds through fractions of :29.1, :59.2 and 1:27.2 before firing home in :28.2 to stop the teletimer in 1:55.4. It was two lengths back to runner-up Pretty Promise, and another 2-1/2 lengths back to With Bells On.

William Roberts of Edmonton, AB owns the seven-time winner has stashed away in excess of $67,000 in her career.

Hope you heal up fast, Rene. Glad Keith, Kelly and Jeff are ok. Oh, and someone give Revoler a hug for me. :)
