Maritime trotting superstar Waiting On A Woman has taken his show on the road to try his luck on the Ontario harness racing scene this spring for trainer and co-owner Mitch Tierney

.

The four-year-old homebred son of Northern Bailey arrived in Ontario about a month ago at trainer Ronnie MacLean’s stable, located at Dorchester Downs Training Center.

After dominating the Maritime trotting ranks at two by winning 10 of his 12 stakes events, Waiting On A Woman added five more stakes triumphs to his record at three while facing a step up in competition from his popular filly foe and Ontario shipper Maple Leaf Spirit. All-in-all he’s banked $56,510 for Mitch and David Tierney and holds multiple track records at Charlottetown Driving Park, Summerside Raceway and Truro Raceway.

Waiting On A Woman Matches 1:58.4 All-Age Trotting Record At CDP

Waiting On A Woman qualified on Thursday over Mohawk Racetrack's five-eighths mile oval in 1:58.1. With Steve Condren aboard, he advanced from fourth and came home in :28.1 -- his fastest final quarter to date -- just missing the win by a head.

“I was very happy with it,” said Tierney of the qualifying effort. “That was kind of what we were planning. The main plan was to keep him trotting and that worked out so we were very happy.”

Tierney is hoping the breaking issues, which Waiting On A Woman was able to overcome on many occasions in his early years, are a thing of the past now that he has the opportunity to race on the bigger Ontario tracks.

“He was just having trouble getting around the first turn at our half-mile tracks and he was good around the first turn today at Mohawk,” said the 24-year-old Cornwall, P.E.I. conditioner after the trotter's first charted Ontario mile. “The bigger track will be a benefit for him, especially with the size of horse he is. He’s a giraffe.”

The big brown gelding is expected to make his first Ontario pari-mutuel start at Woodbine Racetrack in the conditioning ranks.

“We missed all the series the last month or so," said Tierney. "So I’d say right now we'll focus on overnight racing and then we’ll see what happens.”
