Exhibition Park Raceway's reigning top trainer Michael Downey enjoyed a another productive afternoon at the Saint John, N.B. half-mile oval as his stable sent out a trio of winners during Saturday's program
Driver Dale Spence sent Full Of Finesse ($7.30) gate-to-wire to win the third race in 2:01.2 to kick off Downey's training triple. The Saint John conditioner later guided the pocket-sitting Hyperion Blue Chip ($2.50) to a 2:00.4 triumph in the sixth dash and then closed out the eight-race card with another front-end winner, Kass Hall ($10.60), who scored in 2:00.1. Dr. Mitchell Downey Jr. owns all three winners.
Downey led all trainers at EPR last season with 27 local victories. He now has four wins in the first two race days of the 2013 meet.
Leading driver Gilles Barrieau also won three races, including two for trainer Andrew Ward.
In the afternoon's feature race, Eric Wilson trainee Joseph Michael ($3.20) romped to a five length triumph in 1:58.2 in rein to Todd Trites. The 30-time winner is owned by Capital A Investments Ltd. of Lower Cambridge, N.B. and Valerie Phelan of Geary, N.B. He is now two-for-two during the EPR meet.
