Trot Insider has learned that Driver Don McElroy was transported to hospital on Sunday afternoon following a spill in the third race at Clinton Raceway

.

Officials at Clinton Raceway confirm that McElroy, who was driving Thrill Lover, was thrown from his bike shortly after the trotter made a break in deep stretch. McElroy’s bike became tangled up with the bike of driver Garrett Rooney and trotter Windsong Fantasia, who could not avoid the breaking leader.

McElroy was flipped out of the bike and he landed on his left wrist – the same wrist that was shattered and later rebuilt following a spill in a race at Grand River Raceway in 2005. The career winner of 4,015 races and purses in excess of $18 million was taken to hospital in Clinton, and was later transported to hospital in London. He is expected to have surgery later this evening.

Please join Standardbred Canada and officials at Clinton Raceway in wishing McElroy a speedy recovery. We’ll have an update on his condition when details are available.
