Jeff Gillis trainee Highlandbeachsbest swooped from last to first to score as the longest shot on the board in the $36,000 Preferred Pace on Saturday (May 28) at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Second Bruiser barreled to the lead before a :26.4 first quarter while 7-5 favourite Wheels On Fire sat the pocket. The pacesetter cruised to a :55.2 half and faced first-over pressure from Whichwaytothebeach to three-quarters in 1:23.2 before starting to backtrack. Whichwaytothebeach forged to the lead as driver Bob McClure angled Highlandbeachsbest for racetrack and motored home quickest of all to land three-quarter lengths in front of Wheels On Fire at the finish of a 1:51 mile. Whichwaytothebeach settled for third in a blanket photo with Dean B Hanover and East End.
A four-year-old stallion by Somebeachsomewhere, Highlandbeachsbest won his third race from six starts this season and his eighth from 30 overall. The Highland Thoroughbred Farm homebred paid $37.80 to win.
