It was a stakes-filled Friday evening at The Raceway at Western Fair District with the Camluck Classic highlighting the 11-race program and a terrific undercard, which included a quartet of OSS Grassroots divisions for three-year-old pacing fillies and a quartet of City Of London Series finals.
Fade Out rallied from out of the clouds to capture her $21,800 OSS Grassroots assignment for the duo of driver Trevor Henry and trainer Gregg McNair.
Race favourite Addictivebehaviour sprinted through first-half fractions of :27.2 and :56.4 before making a break on the way to the three-quarter pole. Fade Out, who commenced a rally on the way to the half, made a three-wide move in the backstretch and took command at the three-quarter pole in 1:26. She then kicked home in :28.4 to win by 2-1/2 lengths over Dewitt For Josie in 1:54.4. Girl Scout Cookie was third.
McNair shares ownership on the daughter of Sportswriter-Fade with partners Dean Lockhart and Mckinlay & Fielding. It was the first win of the season – and the third to date – for the career winner of $181,772.
Goudawon went down the road for driver Trevor Henry in her $21,800 division. The Murray Brethour trainee, who was winless in her first four starts of the season, halted the teletimer in 1:54.
Henry chopped out fractions of :27.4, :58.2 and 1:26.3 before using a :28.1 closing panel to win by three lengths over Better Double Flip. Third prize went to Ivory Hanover.
The homebred daughter of Betterthancheddar-Keystone Samurai has manufactured a 1-0-2 record from five tries this season for the Lanes – Brenda, Mark and Anthony. The filly, who is now a three-time winner, has now banked in excess of $40,000 in her career.
Velvet Stinger rallied from next to last to capture the third division for the team of driver James MacDonald and trainer Nick Gallucci.
Sent off as the 8-5 favourite, the daughter of Bettors Delight-Our Hot Majorette got away fifth while Girl In A Tavern rolled along on the front end through fractions of :27.1, :57.1 and 1:25.2. Despite owning a four-length lead in the late stages of the mile, she was inhaled late by Velvet Stinger, who rolled out wide and kicked home in :29 to win by three-quarters of a length over Power Of An Angel in 1:55.3. Girl In A Tavern faded to finish third.
Millar Farms of Newmarket, Ont. bred and owns the filly, who went winless in five starts as a freshman, but is now two-for-two to kick off her sophomore season. She’s banked just over $30,000 to date.
Raptors Won went to the front and didn’t look back in the final division for MacDonald and Gallucci.
The daughter of Big Jim-Riveting sliced out fractions of :28.2, :57.3 and 1:26 before stepping home in :28.4 to win by 1-3/4 lengths over Warrawee Xpat in 1:54.4. Crème Delight rounded out the Trifecta ticket.
Sent off as the 4-5 favourite, the Millar Farms homebred now owns a 2-2-0 record from five lifetime starts. Unraced as a rookie, the sophomore has now banked $28,600 to date.
$26,400 City Of London Series Horse & Gelding Trotters
Mass Attack was perfect in the preliminary legs of the series, and he was just as solid in the final thanks to his 1:59 triumph for driver Trevor Henry and trainer Peter Clements.
Henry put the three-year-old son of Muscle Mass-Persnickety on the lead from Post 6 and together they led the group through fractions of :28.4, :59.2 and 1:28.4. A :30.1 closing quarter was just enough to earn the gelding the head decision over The Champ Champ. Third prize went to Energizer De Vie.
Sent off as the 4-5 choice, Mass Attack improved his 2022 record to 3-0-0 from four assignments. Bred and owned by Peter Clements and Barry Klages, the sophomore lifted his lifetime earnings to $29,266 with the victory.
$25,200 City Of London Series Filly & Mare Trotters
The tandem of Henry and Clements also hauled home the hardware with P C Livingadream, who picked a good time to break her maiden.
Henry hustled the three-year-old daughter of Royalty For Life-P C Dreams to the lead from Post 1 and they never looked back. She rolled through splits of :29.2, :59.1 and 1:28.3 before using a :30.1 final panel to win by a head over Larrys Girl in 1:58.4. Completed Promise completed the Trifecta ticket.
Clements bred and owns the youngster who now boasts a 1-1-0 record from four lifetime starts. Unraced as a rookie, the filly has now banked over $15,000 to date.
$29,600 City Of London Series Filly & Mare Pacers
Sexy Playmate earned a new speed badge of 1:55.1 with her front-stepping triumph for driver Trevor Henry.
Sent off at odds of 10-1, the daughter of Shadow Play-Southwind Meredith landed second while Lyons Princess powered to the top and cut the quarter in :27.2. Henry marched his charge out of the pocket on the way to the half, and once she cleared she led the group through middle splits of :57.2 and 1:26.4. A :28.2 closing panel earned her the win by 1-1/2 lengths over Ezbriesybeautiful. Race favourite P L Portia took home the show dough.
Sent off at odds of 10-1, the filly improved her seasonal record to 3-1-1 from 10 assignments for owner/trainer Kyle Bossence of Arthur, Ont. She’s put over $30,000 on her resume following the victory.
$30,200 City Of London Series Horse & Gelding Pacers
Greystone Ian O survived a challenging trip to win as he pleased in his assignment for trainer/driver Lorne House.
The three-year-old son of Sportswriter-Wiskywisky Nancy O got away fourth while Almost There Boss charged to the lead from the far outside and had the field chasing him to the quarter in :28.1. He made the speed through middle splits of :57.2 and 1:25.4, but pestering him from first over was the favourite Greystone Ian O. His steady pressure eventually got to the pacesetter, and final quarter of :30 earned Greystone Ian O the victory by 1-1/2 lengths over Almost There Boss in 1:55.4. Airy Shadow took home the show dough.
House shares ownership on the talented youngster with the Ryans – Clements and Willis. The partners have watched the gelding produce a 5-1-2 record from 10 starts this season after going unraced as a rookie. The lion’s share of the loot lifted his lifetime earnings over $40,000.
$15,000 Princeton Farms Preferred Trot
Cool Muscle had the betting public’s attention based on his speed and skill, and he didn’t disappoint those that backed him as the even-money favourite.
Jody Jamieson got away third from Post 4 with the gelding while Esquire shot to the top and rolled the field to the quarter in :27.3. He came under pressure from Cool Muscle at the mid-way point in :57.3, and Cool Muscle took over command while racing parked at the three-quarter pole in 1:26.1. A final quarter of :30 was enough for Cool Muscle to prevail by 1-3/4 lengths over Esquire in 1:56.1. Arrakis took home third prize.
Trainer Jessica Hayter owns the 18-time winner with Ed Hayter, and together they’ve watched the veteran start the season with a 1-1-0 record from his first two appearances. The $7,500 payday boosted his overall cash stash to $222,182.
