Driver Tyler Borth guided Walters Nip to his fifth straight win at The Raceway at the Western Fair District to begin his career, and the reinsman tacked on four more victories for a haul of five on Tuesday, May 26.
Borth has driven Walters Nip in all five of the three-year-old colt’s starts and has taken him to the lead early each time. After a front-stepping lifetime-best victory a week ago, Walters Nip delivered the fractions of :28, :58.3 and 1:27 and took off on the backstretch on the way to a 4-1/2-length win in 1:56, his fastest mile to date. Captains Legacy (Samuel Fillion) was second-best, followed by Leave It To Lucan (Lorne House).
Walters Nip, a son of All Bets Off-Nippy W Hanover, was successful in his career debut in 1:58.1 in April and has earned $20,200 with five wins in the same number of starts. Frank Baker Jr. of Thamesford, Ont. owns and trains the colt. The win payout was $2.40.
Borth won the next three races in order. He sent both Southwind Chester ($3.60) and Short N Sweet ($2.10) to the top from post seven and got them home to win in 2:00.3 and 2:01.3, respectively. The former won by a head for trainer Steve Bossence, and the latter bottomed out the field to score by 6-3/4 lengths for Dean Wall. Borth completed the natural grand slam with the Ashley Duford-trained April Duford ($11.20), who trekked uncovered from fifth to the lead and prevailed in 1:57.2.
The driver tallied his fifth win of the day in the 10th-race finale with Livin Large, who drew into post two as an also eligible, took a pocket trip, and slid up the passing lane to win by a nose. The gelding stopped the timer in 1:57.4 for conditioner Cameron McQueen. Borth has won 91 races this season in 679 starts and is 46-for-162 at London, good for a local win rate of 28.4 per cent.
