New trainers Devon Wallace and William Folland kicked off Summerside Raceway's harness racing meet with their first ever training triumphs

.

Folland opened the 11-race card with his initial training tally and Wallace completed the early Daily Double with his own milestone win.

Brian MacPhee guided Folland's sophomore pacing colt Pictionian Press ($23.90) to a 2:00.4 maiden-breaking upset win in the opener. The victory was the first in 10 starts for the 66-year-old O'Leary conditioner.

Wallace sent out the first three starters of his training career on Sunday and the 22-year-old resident of Alberton earned his initial victory with Mike Stevenson driving four-year-old pacer Canvasback Bud ($7.20) to a maiden-breaking 2:02.3 score in the second race.

Wallace has already earned recognition in P.E.I. as an up-and-coming driver. Although he hasn't started in a pari-mutuel race yet, he was named 2009 Driver of the Year in the Under 21 Division and 2010 Amateur Driver of the Year as the top point earner in the matinee driving series.

His other starters, Elm Grove Fallstaff and Smart Barney, finished third and fifth, respectively.

Later on the card, the Prince County Horsemen’s Club paid tribute to Maritime Provinces Harness Racing commissioner Wendell Shaw with the ninth race named in his honour. Shaw, family, friends and members of the Prince County Horsemen's Club were in the winner's circle to present a cooler to Jason Sherry, Darla MacEachern, trainer Duane MacEachern and driver Marc Campbell after Bakardi Arti won the Wendell Shaw Appreciation Pace in 1:59.2. The PCHC held an appreciation dinner earlier in the day for Shaw.
