Trot Insider has learned that driver Tyler Redwood will be sidelined for multiple weeks after sustaining a leg injury from a racing accident on Sunday at Century Downs Racetrack and Casino.
Redwood's mount Karate King was barring in around the final turn in last Sunday's second race and as the reinsman tried to correct him, Karate King took a step and fell. Redwood said he was about to bail from the sulky, but his leg was caught between the shafts and gaiting strap.
"All I could do was lay and scream in pain and hold on to his back leg from kicking me in the head until help came," Redwood told Trot Insider, recalling the scary incident.
Redwood was transported to the hospital where he underwent precautionary CT scans and x-rays. Upon further consultations and re-examinations, doctors concluded Redwood suffered muscle ligament and soft tissue damage to his right leg.
The 31-year-old Edmonton reinsman is expected to be out of action for at least two weeks.
"Thanks again to all the horsemen and women that were able to help. It shows we are all family when in need," said Redwood, grateful for the assistance and well wishes offered to him after the incident.
Officials with Century Downs had confirmed with Trot Insider on Sunday that Karate King only suffered minor bumps and bruises from the fall.
Please join Standardbred Canada in wishing Redwood a full and speedy recovery.
