Charron On Bud Light-Bound Mcaracas

The money's already spent, committed mostly to stakes payments, but Quebec horseman Robert Charron is still reveling in Saturday's victory by three-year-old Mcaracas in the $80,000 final of the Diplomat Pacing Series at Woodbine Racetrack

.

It's been a while since any horse he owned captured a purse that size. Nine years, in fact. The last one was Life Sizzles, who made $42,250 finishing fourth to Ring Of Life in the final of the Confederation Cup in 2001 after winning a $40,000 elimination over the same horse earlier that afternoon.

Charron, who co-owns Mcaracas with Gilles Parent, picked up the son of McArdle for $19,000 at the Harrisburg yearling sale. With the horse now entrusted to trainer Benoit Baillargeon, they've collected $109,000 to date.

"Price doesn't make the horse," said Charron, "McArdle is not a bad sire, and the dam (Smooth Latin N) had produced before. I think the fact he went very late in the sale probably made him cheaper."

He's had calls about Mcaracas but "I'm not in a hurry (to sell)."

The horse's next scheduled start is in the $38,345 second division of the Bud Light Stakes Friday at Flamboro Downs, where he's the 5-2 morning-line favourite from Post 2 in Race 4.

"Then he'll get three weeks off" before gearing up again for the Burlington Stakes in June, Charron said.
