The Wednesday (May 10) evening card at The Raceway at the Western Fair District featured a victory in the $12,000 Fillies and Mares Preferred Handicap by Shoot The Whiskey as well as six divisions of the first leg of The City of London Pacing Series.
Shoot The Whiskey (Travis Cullen) got away last in the field of six as the field filed out in front of her. At the opening panel in :28.4, Shoot The Whiskey sat 8-1/4 lengths off the leading Major League N (Ed Hensley). Before the half in :59.1, Cullen and Shoot The Whiskey were on the move on the outside, following the cover of Randomirogeo (Travis Henry) and closing the gap between them and the leaders along the rail. The three-quarters was reached in 1:27.4 as Shoot The Whiskey moved three-wide. Down the stretch, the mare kicked into gear and won by a length in 1:56. Major League N ended up second and Exotic Dragon (Ryan Desroche) finished third.
Jodie Cullen trains the four-year-old daughter of Shadow Play and the American Ideal mare Arm In Arm for owners Paul Sanders, J J J Stables, and Travis Cullen. Shoot The Whiskey has a career record of 14-5-5 in 31 starts with $201,067 and moved her seasonal record to 2-1-2 in seven starts.
In the card opener and a $8,000 first leg division of the City of London Series for pacers, favoured No Money Honey ($4.50) and Colin Kelly waited until the three-quarters to make a move on the leader. Once the Kyle Bossence trainee entered the stretch, she buzzed by her opponents to win by 1-3/4 lengths in 1:56.2. Lady Bonita was second and Roulette Hanover was third.
Oh Gouda ($5.30) was driven by her trainer Michael Horner to a wire-to-wire victory in 1:58. Yoda Queen finished second while favoured Pink Monster was third. It was the sixth win in nine starts this season for the daughter of Betterthancheddar.
Unraced as a freshman, Steel Beauty ($3.50) won her sixth race in 11 starts this season after winning by 1-1/4 lengths in 1:56 for driver Travis Henry and trainer Tim Myers. Lady Get Lucky was second and Miss Maycee was third.
Sporty Bob ($2.70) kicked off the series for the males as he went wire-to-wire with Tyler Borth, winning by six lengths in 1:55.4. Edward Hayter conditions the son of Sportswriter. Max Shadow maneuvered a trip from last to finish second and Four Foot Gimme was third.
Tyler Borth and Boom Town Boy ($3.60) took a similar trip around the track, going wire-to-wire in 1:56.3, winning by 1-1/4 lengths over Speaker Of Peace and Beach Tour. Wayne McGean trains the winner.
Troubles A Brewin ($7.50) concluded the Wednesday series action, matching the preceding male races in wire-to-wire fashion. The Anthony Beaton trainee was driven by Anthony Haughan to a one-length victory in 1:56. Favoured Holy Jalapeno was second and Crazy World finished third.
