Windsong Grand Ave thumped her nine rivals in Monday’s $60,000 Ontario Spring Series final for three-year-old pacing fillies at Woodbine Racetrack
with a sparkling 1:51.4 stakes record victory for driver Jody Jamieson.
The well-bred daughter of Camluck-Jasper Avenue was let go at generous odds of 12-1 despite an easy victory in last week’s second leg of the series.
In Monday’s contest, Windsong Grand Ave got away fifth from post nine and watched Manvers Short Cut put up an opening panel of :26.2. Jamieson, meanwhile, sent his charge to the outside in the second quarter and was advancing quickly from fifth past a :55.3 half mile.
Manvers Short Cut could not fend off the challenge of Windsong Grand Ave who blasted to command and took the field by the third marker in 1:23.3. Once on top, Windsong Grand Ave built up a five-length lead at the seven eighths marker and then cruised to a three-length victory.
Warm Waffles rallied late to pick up the place spot with On The Cusp rounding out the top three. Windsong Grand Ave returned $27.90 for the win and lowered the previous stakes record of 1:52.1 which was held by Stabilo.
“Last week, you know I was very cautious with her,” said Jamieson. “She’s made breaks in the past last year when she was growing and filling out. She seems like she’s a lot more mature now. I was just able to land in a spot early in the race and when I moved her she was nothing but gangbusters.”
Windsong Grand Ave now has two wins in three outings this season for trainer Shawn Robinson and owners Bill and Harry Loyens of Ontario. The winner’s share of the purse boosted her career bankroll to just over $56,000.
