If all goes according to plan, the site of a former Canadian Standardbred racetrack will soon be home to a mix of commercial and agricultural lands.
According to an article by the Goldstream News Gazette, a large portion of the North Saanich, B.C. grounds that used to be home to Sandown Park has been officially transferred to the municipality.
The report explains that land has been carved into a 12-acre commercial portion and roughly 83 acres that have been designated as agricultural land.
North Saanich has been pondering the best use for the agricultural land with the Capital Region Food and Agricultural Initiatives Roundtable and some local experts.
“When you consider the fact that only three per cent of B.C.’s land is able to support food production, this Peninsula — with its rich soils, mild winters, and abundant sunshine — is an absolute treasure,” Jen Rashleigh, a member of the transition planning team, has been quoted as saying.
The Goldstream News Gazette piece also states that the commercial portion of the lands is scheduled to be home to a new Canadian Tire store, which has been under development ‘for months.’
