Flying Instructor followed flight instructions well to win $100,000 Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund final, while Warning Zone won the photo in the $37,000 Preferred/Handicap pace at Dover Downs
on Monday.
In similar fashion to his two preliminary leg wins, Tim Tetrick took Flying Instructor away smartly and after taking the early lead led throughout scoring a 1:51.4 victory in the first of four DSBF $100,000 finals this week. The winning time is the fastest for a sophomore colt pacer in early 2012. Owned by Niel Gargiulo, Louie Paglierani, Legacy Racing of Del and Nanticoke Racing, the son of Badlands Hanover-Daylon Flyer won for the third time this season and for the eighth time in 16 career starts. He’s banked close to $170,000 in his career. Flying Instructor’s current win streak is five-in-a-row. Chizzled In Stone close strongly along the passing lane for George Dennis to edge Bail Money and Ben Stafford, Jr. for second.
A big day continued for trainer Wayne Givens when 67-1 shot, Three Mints, owned by Sharon White and Legacy Racing Of Del, came on in deep stretch to win the $20,000 DSBF consolation pace. Allan Davis drove the Three Olives-Pamela Heather three-year-old to his maiden victory in 1:57.1. Im Lucky Again (Ron Pierce) was runner-up. Mellman (Tim Tetrick) was the show finisher.
In the $37,000 feature on the regular program, VIP Internet Stable’s Warning Zone got to the finish line first edging Feel Like A Fool and Montrell Teague and Daryl Bier-driven Fools Gold in 1:50.3. It completed a triple for driver Tony Morgan and meet-leading trainer Josh Green. The win was the sixth of the year for the Jate Lobell-Cambridge United gelding who has been in the top three in all but one of his 12 starts this season. Warning Zone has banked $699,921 in his career. Both Nova Artist and Fancyfreeshark were scratched.
Tim Tetrick finished with four wins, Tony Morgan and Ron Pierce had three each and owner Betty, trainer Don and driver Bret Brittingham had two wins apiece.
The second of four $100,000 DSBF Three-Year-Old finals this week is set for Tuesday with Macs Journey, after two preliminary leg wins, the one to beat. A $27,500 Mares Open pace heads the regular card.
