Samosa The Nation’s Speediest Sophomore

Published: April 7, 2022 09:54 pm EDT

It’s that time of year when waves of sophomores return from winter hibernation and strut their stuff on the track, and Samosa is a specimen that certainly did that Thursday evening at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

In what was her second start of the season for trainer Scott McEneny, Samosa rallied for a 1:55.1 triumph in an $18,000 overnight event at the Campbellville oval.

Sent off as the 3-2 favourite, the three-year-old daughter of Cantab Hall-Kolachke got away third for Sylvain Filion. She was shuffled to fifth at the mid-way point, but made a three-wide move on the way to the three-quarter pole. With fractions of :28.1, :56.4 and 1:26.2 in front of her, she then stormed home in :27.4 to win by 3-1/2 lengths over Vali Hanover. Unbeatable Kemp was third.

The 1:55.1 clocking makes the filly the nation’s fastest sophomore trotter of the season regardless of sex. McEneny owns the talented lass, who went 1-2-1 from eight starts and banked over $60,000 as a rookie, with breeder Frederick Hertrich of Seaford, DE. The filly upped her earnings to $75,038 with the win.
