Resistance Futile was one of seven pacers on the gate for this week’s edition of the $11,000 Preferred 2 at The Raceway at Western Fair District, and he proved to be a cut above the rest in the main event.

The five-year-old son of Real Desire-Capelo, in rein to Taylor Burgess, tucked into an early four hole while On Golden Ponder marched to the top and sliced out first-half fractions of :28.2 and :58.3. Resistance Futile came first-over on the pacesetter on the way to the mid-way point, but a quick brush earned the attacker the top spot on the way to the three-quarter pole.

Resistance Futile rolled by the third marker in 1:26.3 before using a :28.1 closing panel to win by 2-1/2 lengths over Si Semalu in 1:54.4. American Terror finished fourth, but was later placed third when race favourite Czar Seelster – who was third under the line – was set back to fifth for causing interference to trailing foes on the way to the three-quarter point.

Blair Burgess trains Resistance Futile for Burgess Stable, Champagne Stable and James Walker. It was the first win of the season for the 14-time winner who pushed his lifetime earnings to $309,778.

Conflict Diamond was a front-stepping winner later on the card in the $7,500 Preferred 3 for male pacers. The five-year-old son of Badlands Hanover-Diamond Jubilee sped through splits of :27.2, :56.4 and 1:26.1 before cruising home in a :30-second clip for the 1:56.1 decision. Runner-up Monster In Law was 1-1/2 lengths in arrears, with third prize going to Darth Bader.

Alfie Carroll mapped out the winning trip for the gelding, who is owned and trained by Larry Johnson of London, Ontario. The win improved his 2015 record to 3-0-2 from nine trips to the track. The 16-time winner has banked more than $80,000 to date.
