Peenie was sent off as the even-money favourite in Thursday’s featured $13,000 Preferred Pace at Rideau Carleton Raceway, and the Colin Johnson-trained gelding didn’t disappoint his backers

.

In fact, Peenie, who did disappoint as the odds-on choice in last week’s Preferred event, drew off to win in dominant fashion on Thursday evening for driver Stephane Gendron.

Peenie got away third while Best Show In Town sprinted past the quarter pole in :27.2. Best Show In Town was still in command of the tempo at the mid-way point in :56.2, but Gendron had Peenie out and driving from first over. Peenie blew past that foe and drew off to lead by a pair of lengths at the three-quarter marker in 1:24.1. A final frame clocked in :29.4 was more than enough for Peenie to win by 4-1/4 lengths in 1:54 over last week’s Preferred winner, Firethorn. Tyber King was third.

Johnson shares ownership on the six-year-old son of Real Artist with Ecurie JGV Enrg of Laval, QC. The victory was the pacer’s third of the season and the 32nd of his career.

The combination of driver Guy Gagnon and trainer Sebastien Giroux had a good night at the office thanks to their respective three-win performances. They clicked with Rainmaker (2:00.2), JCs Kadabra (1:59.4) and Totallyfree De Vie (1:56.4).

Trainer Brenda Spence and driver Todd Warren also enjoyed a productive night. They won with L M Elika (1:59), Mythic Voyage (1:56.3) and Greek Island (1:55.1). Warren also notched a catch-driving win with the Pat Zappia-trained Pembroke Dreamer (1:59) to bring his nightly win total to four.
