Got Er Done and driver Slick Rick Macomber rolled home in the second round of the Tubby Trimble series Saturday, April 25. The duo shocked everyone with their big move around the final turn to pick up the win in 1:55.3 at odds of 35-1
.
Starting from the second tier Post 10 in the 11-horse lineup, Got Er Done had no choice but to sit patiently in mid pack as several of the heavy hitters in the race rushed out for the top spots. Master Punch and Don Eash got the first call at the quarter in :28.1 followed by Bernardi and Trace Tetrick, who soon took over for the middle fractions in :57.0 and 1:26.1.
In the stretch, all eyes were on the winners from the past week’s Tubby Trimble divisions as Master Punch and Hawks Copperstone seemed to be getting in position for the stretch drive home. However, the far outside was occupied by Got Er Done, who was gaining momentum with every stride. He passed his rivals in the final strides to win by one and one-half lengths over Matts Image and Mark O’Mara, who also closed well for second. Hawks Copperstone and Jason Dillander snuck through traffic to finish third.
“The second tier really helped out a lot,” said Macomber. “I thought this horse (Got Er Done) raced really well last week, so I wasn’t surprised at all today. He impressed me. The wind was really a factor. I had to get the horse out and toward the front a lot quicker than I wanted to.”
Got Er Done earned a career best time through a strong final quarter head wind with the effort in only his second start of 2009. Trained by Jerry Smith, who also conditioned the great racehorse Storm Damage, Got Er Done is owned by Smith and his wife, Betty, along with Christine Hacht. The three-year-old Storm Damage gelding increased his career earnings to more than $13,000 with the victory.
In other Trimble action, Dean M and leading driver Peter Wrenn scored a mild upset, besting the field of 11 in a time of 1:55.4. The time equaled his career best mark from 2008.
After a rocky start that left Dean M with an interference break in the first turn, Wrenn was able to get the three-year-old Electric Yankee collected and back in the game, using a strong brush in the stretch to pass by the top horses. Dean M went on to win impressively by more than four lengths over Yankee Vigilante and Doug Rideout. Stiltz and Chris Loney kept close to the lead the entire way for third.
“I’d never driven this horse (Dean M) before, so I didn’t know what to expect,” said Wrenn. “In the stretch, I thought we could catch them all, and I felt he got a lot stronger near the wire. The wind was really a factor today. It’s really tough on hearing and judgment during a race.”
Dean M is owned by Bernard Brown of Saginaw, Michigan and trained by Tim Roach. The effort was his first start of 2009. He increased his career bankroll to nearly $20,000 in the effort.
