Earlier this month, horseman Wally Hennessey helped entertain the sold-out crowd during the Prince Edward Island Standardbred Horse Owners Association’s annual awards banquet in Charlottetown on Saturday evening (April 13).
While in discussion with Vance Cameron, Hennessey touched on various topics, including his start in the race game at the Charlottetown Driving Park under the guidance of his father, Joe, who Wally described as the best horseman he ever knew. Wally also discussed his experiences with the legendary Moni Maker, one of the greatest trotters in the sport of harness racing.
The Journal Pioneer recently ran a profile piece on the respected reinsman that recently notched his 10,000th career driving victory.
“My education was right here on the grounds of the Charlottetown Driving Park,” Hennessey told The Journal Pioneer, and later added, “You don't just get to the top because they like your racing colours or the way you speak. Results, in anything, is what matters. Another key is to stay hungry. Never be satisfied with what has happened. Drive on. Maybe the next one will be better.”
Although Hennessey has reached some of the pinnacles in the sport of harness racing, he remains grounded.
“Forty years ago, nobody would be inviting me to speak anywhere,” he said. “Here I am 40 years later, and I am not only humbled by it, but it just makes me proud.”
