After a runner-up finish in last week's Open Pace, Thats It was able to fend off all challengers for her first win at the open level on Saturday (April 21) at Century Downs.
The feature of the Saturday afternoon card -- the $9,000 Fillies & Mares Open Pace -- was reduced to a field of five after Divas Dragonsfly was announced as a scratch. As the wings of the gate folded, Rod Hennessy hustled Thats It away from post 2 with rail-sitting stablemate Remember Terror (Doug Chappell) yielding for the pocket ride. Favoured American Passion (Bobby Clark), the winner of the Open Pace one week ago, landed in fourth as Thats It passed the first station in :29.4 and set a tepid tempo.
As the field passed in front of the Century Downs tarmac for the first time, Clark right-lined American Passion from fourth to pressure the pacesetter. The halfway mark was reached in :59.4 with American Passion gaining on Thats It with every stride. Down the backside, the pace quickened and American Passion was within a length of the leader at the 1:27.4 third station. Chappell tipped Remember Terror around American Passion to the three-wide path to make it a three-horse race turning for home.
Through the stretch, both American Passion and Remember Terror narrowed the gap on the leader but the wire came just in time for Thats It to manage victory by a head over American Passion in 1:57.2 with Remember Terror a half-length back in third.
Thats It (Dragon Again - Thats No Lady) now sports two wins in 11 seasonal starts for Hennessy, who trains and co-owns the four-year-old with Lorne Duffield of Edmonton and Jean Crochetiere of Beaumont, Alta.
