With three months of the harness racing calendar complete, Trot Insider provides an update on the national leaderboard for drivers and trainers at the first quarter mark of 2023.
Canada's reigning Driver of the Year, James MacDonald once again leads the way on the driving side for earnings, and a solid night at the office on Saturday (April 1) helped add to that total. MacDonald's 2023 bankroll of $1,280,955 on Canadian soil leads the way, with Louis-Philippe Roy ($1,016,360) and Doug McNair ($916,055) next best in the nation as of press time.
Brandon Campbell leads the way in the UDRS category sporting a sparkling 0.533 average — tops in North America for drivers with at least 65 starts. Campbell fronts Scott Knight (0.342) and Colin Kelly (0.341) among Canadian drivers in this category.
On the dash leaderboard, Tyler Borth has posted 99 wins on Canadian soil thus far this year to top the standings. MacDonald (85) and Campbell (83) rank second and third, respectively.
Richard Moreau, Canada's 10-time Trainer of the Year, has sprinted out to an early lead with 79 wins and $1,244,961 in earnings on Canadian soil to lead both of those categories while also ranking second in North America. Jodie Cullen (51 wins and $633,488 in stable earnings) ranks second in the nation. Carmen Auciello ($601,030) is ranked third in earnings while Kelly Hoerdt sits third on the wins chart with 33 victories.
Among trainers with 65 or more seasonal starts, Mike Timpano boasts a 0.463 leading UTRS with Jim Marino (0.440) and Hoerdt (0.409) rounding out the top three.
***All statistics include Canadian starts from January 1, 2023 to April 1, 2023, with 65 start minimum for URS.
