According to trainer Rod Hughes, San Pail, the two-time defending Maple Leaf Trot champion, is scheduled to qualify this coming Monday at Mohawk
Racetrack.
Hughes, a resident of Dunsford, Ont., told the Woodbine Entertainment Group that he recently trained his star trotter in 2:03 over Kawartha Downs and everything is 'all systems go.'
“He’s all set to qualify this Monday," Hughes said. “He looks just as good now as he did when he won the Glorys Comet in 1:53.2 in mid-January.”
San Pail tasted defeat just two-times in 2010 from 15 starts, good for seasonal earnings of $656,500.
When asked what the short-term plan is for San Pail, Hughes has decided to leave that up to the horse’s regular pilot, Randy Waples.
“Randy is going to qualify him on Monday and he can decide if he needs another qualifier before we put him in the box. We never completely shut him down after the Glorys Comet. We have him a week or two off then lightly jogged him every day to keep him fit.”
Hughes was also asked whether San Pail is up to the challenge of another Maple Leaf Trot victory.
“Hopefully,” Hughes laughed. “He’s feeling terrific and there isn’t a thing wrong with him. Sure, he’s seven years old, but we managed him correctly for this coming summer.”
The son of San Pellegrino has earnings of $1,793,965 for Hughes and co-owner/breeder Glenn Van Camp.
