Kiawah and trainer/driver Dave Hudon had no problems turning the tables on Trust The Artist in Sunday afternoon’s $12,000 Open Pace at Fraser Downs.
Trust The Artist, who front-stepped his way to a 1:53.1 score in last week’s Open Pace, was unable to double up in class thanks to a razor sharp effort turned in by Kiawah.
It was, however, Trust The Artist who established the early lead in today’s marquee match-up. He rolled the field through fractions of :28 and :57.2 before coming under attack from Kiawah shortly past the mid-way point of the mile.
Kiawah, who occupied the three-hole for the first half of the contest, swept up quickly to engage and overtake Trust The Artist at the three-quarter pole in 1:24.3. A :29-second final frame was more than enough for Kiawah to drive away in deep stretch.
Trust The Artist, who was sent off as the 1-2 favourite, had to settle for the runner-up award while third prize was doled out to Warrawee Iceman.
Bill Boden of Vancouver and Monica Hudon of Edmonton, AB share ownership on the five-year-old son of Western Ideal, who is now 2-for-3 this season. The 12-time winner has banked more than $117,000 to date.
