There was a clear theme ringing in the early Daily Double at Fraser Downs on Sunday afternoon as Phone Terror collected her second stakes trophy thanks to a dominant win in the Penny Bath Memorial Stake and Stop Calling doubled up in an accident marred Open Pace
.
Muriel Fornald Memorial Stake winner Phone Terror and trainer-driver Serge Masse kicked off the card with a 1:55 victory in the $15,000 Penny Bath Memorial for three-year-old pacing fillies.
Undefeated in four sophomore starts, Phone Terror got away fourth after a Post 6 start and advanced to command past the :27.3 opening quarter. She established a two length lead on her rivals as she carved out middle panels of :56.3 and 1:25.4 before drawing off by over three lengths and shaving three-fifths of a second off her lifetime mark.
The Western Terror-Miss Lex miss paid $2.80 to win as the heavy favourite while Yarhos (J.F. Gagne), the longest shot on the board at 32-1, came in second and 10-1 shot Cheyenne J (David Hudon), last year's B.C. Breeders Stakes champion and B.C. Sires Stakes runner-up, hit the board for the first time this season.
Phone Terror now boasts eight career wins with two second place showings from 10 starts and $41,025 banked in purses for owner Lucy Raymond of Surrey, B.C.
Fresh off a victory in last week's Open, Stop Calling completed the early 'telephone' themed Daily Double with another wire-to-wire romp in this week's $12,500 top pace.
As Stop Calling and trainer-driver John Hudon fired to command from Post 2, outsider Living It Up (Serge Masse) suffered some equipment issues. Meanwhile, Stop Calling led the remaining pacers past fractions of :28.3, :57.1 and 1:25.4 en route to an one and a half length triumph in 1:54.3. Gramrun Jake (Tim Brown) advanced first over to place and Killean Cut Kid (John Abbott) followed from second over to show over pocket-sitter Nobody Can (Jim Marino).
Favourite Stop Calling paid $4.30 to win and completed the $6 Double. The six-year-old Kents On Nuke-Plain Image N gelding, who sports a 2012 record reading 3-2-4 in 10 outings and $30,500, is owned by Dr James Findlay of Maple Ridge, B.C. He is now 21-for-50 with $172,531 banked lifetime.
