Ron Waller, a longtime harness horse owner and fan, was winner of the first Delaware Living Legend Award at the Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association’s 62nd annual awards dinner at Dover Downs Hotel on Thursday

(March 31).

Prior to his harness racing days, Waller was an all-time football great at Laurel (Del) High School where he set the state record for points scored in one season and for a career. These records still stand today, six decades later.

Waller was an All-American back at the University of Maryland and also in his senior year an All-American lacrosse player.

Waller played for the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams where he was named an All-Pro Defense Back.

Later, he coached and scouted in the NFL and World Football League. Waller is credited with recommending to Philadelphia Eagles coach Dick Vermeil, Vince Papale, whose career was recently featured in the film "Victory.”

Waller was unable to receive his award in person. He is in a rehab facility recovering from surgery.
